Honor, Hope and In Between

Julie is the oldest of 5 girls in an Italian family. Her first language was Italian as she learned English upon beginning first grade. She became responsible for many duties when her mother had a serious illness when Julie was age 15.

She was unable to attend college after high school due to the family situation. She married her husband David at age 22 and became a mother of 2 children Albert & Cori. She returned to her education and graduated at age 54 as a teacher on the same day as her daughter Cori. She has certifications in elementary education, special education and high school English and is a teacher at the Lawrence County Career & Technical Center.

Three weeks after graduation, her son was married and he left for Iraq as a U.S. Marine. Julie is a mother of Fallen Marine Cpl Albert P. Gettings. The opportunity arose that Julie became involved in the Medal of Honor Character Development Program and she continues to integrate the Medal of Honor Values into her curriculum. She was interviewed by Parade magazine and has received the Pride of Promise award for her teaching efforts.
She is active in two foundations for her son Albert.
